Freightliner Columbia Aerodynamics

Aerodynamic Testing/Wind Tunnel
Wind tunnel tests showed a significant reduction in overall aerodynamic drag on the Columbia tractor when compared to older conventional used trucks.

Lower air drag means the vehicle provides less wind resistance and slices through the air easier thereby improving fuel economy potential.

Improved potential fuel economy thereby reducing fuel costs.

Tapered Cab
Feature: Columbia’s cab is tapered from front to back. The day cab’s width is 78 inches in the front to 82 inches in the back, while the sleeper model’s width is 78 inches in the front to 91 inches in the back. The Columbia’s cab is 10 inches wider at the back of the door (the “B” pillar) than the FLD.

The tapered cab decreases wind resistance.

Gives your fleet a better potential at achieving fuel mileage advantages.

Hood Slope
The Columbia’s hood is sloped at 12.7 degrees.

The sloped hood decreases wind resistance and improves driver visibility.

Reduced potential fuel cost with aerodynamics and  increased visibility potential for fewer accidents.

Aerodynamic Bumper
The Columbia’s bumper design allows air to move around it in a slipstream fashion, yet eliminates the use of a lower air dam.

Decreased wind resistance and fewer parts.

Reduced potential fuel costs when driving at road speeds, and less worry of trapped snow under the bumper.

Roof Fairing
The roof fairing on the Columbia is larger than those on most conventional trucks, and has been moved closer to the front of the roof.

Design allows for optimized airflow over the tractor roof and trailer.

Better potential fuel mileage at highway speeds, thereby reducing fuel costs.

Sun Visor
The sun visor was designed specifically not to impede or restrict airflow.

Improves airflow around the cab by wrapping around the parts of the cab that would typically impede airflow.

Reduced potential fuel costs while making long hauls at highway speeds & increased visibility in daylight conditions.

Windshield
The curved shape of the Columbia’s two-piece windshield is sloped at an optimum angle of 24 degrees, which allows for better airflow around and over the cab.

The windshield’s curve and slope decreases wind resistance.

Lower wind resistance results in less fuel used at highway speeds, lowering potential fuel costs.

Mirrors
The mirrors are designed with aerodynamics in mind.

Convex shape reduces wind resistance.

Reducing coefficient drag at higher speeds.

Chassis Fairings
Chassis side fairings are available from the front wheels to the end of the cab or extending on to the rear wheels.

Side fairings direct the flow of air around otherwise obstructive elements such as tires/wheels and fuel tanks, contributing to a decrease of wind resistance.

Lower wind resistance improves potential for fuel economy and helps to reduce fuel costs.
